The Problem With Potential

I really dislike the word “potential” The dictionary defines it like this

potential |pəˈten ch əl|
adjective [ attrib. ]
having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the future :

Here is my problem. When someone tells me that we have the potential to do something great, or the potential as a church to grow and reach more people, or the potential to impact our community, what they are really saying is that we are not currently doing it. Potential is all about the future and not about the present. I’m not a patient person. While I know God has great things in store for us in the future, we must continually take advantages of the opportunities that we have NOW. The only way to reach your full potential is to quit talking about it and start living it out in the present.
