Which Way Do I Go?

September 18, 2007 — Leave a comment

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the direction for this blog. It started out as a blog for just my random thoughts. I have posted about youth ministry, church, technology, and my family, probably in that order. But over the last year, I have gone through some big changes in my life. The biggest of course was my transition into full-time ministry. I spent ten years doing part time ministry as a youth pastor, but now I am also the pastor. So which direction will the blog go? I think over the next year, I will focus on some different things. So here’s my list

  • pastoring a church plant: There are so many unique issues that new churches face. I want to address what we are going through, especially in the context of a small town in the south. Being a portable church also raises some interesting questions, so I want to talk about what we are learning.
  • the combination of pastor/youth pastor roles: I have seen very little on this, probably because you have to be crazy to attempt it. And I know that as we grow, I will have to transition into one or the other. But for right now, it’s working and I want to share why.
  • the use of technology in small churches: How can a small church use technology without breaking the bank? I want to share some ways we are using technology as well as where we want to go.
  • my family: I am incredibly blessed with a wonderful family. I can’t keep quiet about my kids and my wife. And since it’s my blog, you’re going to hear about them!
  • and any other random thoughts I have: As I’m studying I want to share what I’m learning. I’m interested in all different types of computers and technology and gadgets, but I’m also a student of culture as well. When I see something that is insightful, I will be sure to pass it along.

YouVersion

I got an invite to take part in the alpha testing of YouVersion. This is going to be a great resource for Christians to search and find web content related to Bible passages. Lifechurch.tv is sponsoring this web 2.0 application and my first impression is very good. I like it because it is an excellent website. Churches should be leading the innovation and creative use of the internet, and this is a great example of a church rising up to the challenge.

I’ve been waiting for several years for US Cellular to offer a cool phone. They are always behind the other carriers, but we have no choice since we live in the sticks. They finally have the Motorola Q smartphone. I called and my plan is up in another month, so I can get a new phone. Now I just have to decide if it is worth an extra $25 a month to have internet access through my phone. It would let me check and send email from anywhere. While that’s definitely interesting and fun, I really have to think if it is a time-saver or a time-waster. I used to have a dell axim pocketpc, so I am pretty familiar with the windows mobile interface. I still want the iphone, but that’s not an option since we only have cdma coverage in our area. I think I may have talked myself into it. Now the waiting begins.

We have been having on again/off again problems with our church website for a while. So our host is making some changes to hopefully solve our intermittent problems. The downside is that our website has been down for a couple of days. We are hoping that it will be back up and running very soon without the problems we have been having over the last few months. It’s been one of those situations where our host is sure that the problem is with our local service provider, the local service provider (embarq) says the problem is with the host, and the real problem might actually be with the previous company who hosted for us.

Technology is a great tool, but we cannot become so accustomed to it that we cannot operate without it. I have been around long enough to see that if anything typically can go wrong with church equipment or websites, that it probably will. It has made me think about developing some contingency plans for what to do when we have tech problems like this. But I still think that Satan lives in cables and processors, just seeing how he can disrupt our church. But it ain’t going to work, because we’re going to keep telling others about Jesus, whether our website is working or not!

I forgot to post about a significant event last month. It was my one year anniversary of blogging. 220 posts in a year. I guess that’s not too bad. I have been surprised how much I have enjoyed writing. It’s definitely been a creative outlet for me. There have been so many times that I wanted to write about something, but just didn’t have the time or energy. Maybe I will get a little better on consistency this year.

So without further introduction… Here are some of my favorite posts from my first year of blogging!!

Why We Exist Video

I am very interested in some of the neat sermon intro videos that churches are doing now. I downloaded a trial copy of Adobe After Effects, but after just a few minutes of playing with it, I realized that it is not a program to learn without going through tutorials and using some reference books. I even contacted a technical arts guy at another church to see if he would be interested in doing some freelance video work. For a 20 second video to open the series that I am doing now at church, the cost was going to be around $400. So being the cheapskate that I am, I decided to do a quick video using Adobe Premier Elements. Of course I can’t do all the neat 3d stuff that I wanted to do, but for 90 minutes of work, I feel that this turned out decent. I am really glad that some church like LifeChurch.tv and NewSpring are offfering their videos for free. I think videos and media make such an impact and stick in peoples memories, but the cost to buy the programs and do the videos is just too much for most small churches. Anyway, here’s the current series intro for Cornerstone.

I’ve been playing around with the social networking site facebook the last few days. It seems much cleaner and easier to use than myspace. It seems like a neat way to connect with some other pastors and some old friends. I must be getting old because there are very few people my age from my schools who are on facebook. Right now, it does seem to be much more of a college site than myspace. Most of the teens at our church use myspace and many of them haven’t even heard of facebook.

Anyway, if you have any good tips about facebook and how it can be used for ministry let me know. I’ve added quite a few former youth as friends, so I’ll see how this viral thing works. If you are on facebook and want to add me as a friend click
