This was a strange week for American Idol. Both David Archuleta and Jason Castro sang songs about Jesus. Then on the results show tonight, the Clark Brothers sang a version of This Little Light of Mine that was actually pretty cool, then Dolly Parton sang about Jesus and Gravity and then talked about her faith. Then Brooke talked about Jesus. Wow, that was pretty amazing. We always think that we have to have a Christian substitute for everything in the world, then Jesus decides to come along and use the most popular tv show in the country. I think we aim too low.
Archives For Crazy Stuff
I have been on a crazy schedule since Daylight Savings Time changed. I am still functioning based on the old time. I go to bed after 1am and get up around 8:30am and just can’t seem to get adjusted. I know I need to get on a better routine, but it’s tough since I seem to be most productive getting work done after the kids go to bed. I think it goes back to the fact that for the past 12 years I was in effect a bi-vocational minister. The only time I had to spend preparing lessons and sermons was late at night. It’s tough to break old habits.
The last few days have been especially tough, I’ve had a lot on my mind and have gotten much less sleep than normal. But at least it’s time well spent, since I am usually reading or studying my Bible. Enough rambling for now, I just wish we could stick with a time and not change back and forth. About the time I get adjusted, we’ll be switching back.
If you have ever been to my house at night, you know that we have a lot of wildlife around our house. We live in the city limits and since you can’t hunt inside the city limits, most of the wildlife is pretty tame. We live right on the edge of town and we have a couple of acres in our yard. On most any night you will see deer everywhere. My neighbor counted over 30 whitetail deer in our yard one night. We also have wild turkeys walk through the yard in the middle of the day. There are squirrels, hawks, skunks, cats, and dogs in our yard all the time. But we had a new visitor on Monday. I was looking out my back window and I saw a fox. I quickly grabbed my camera and snapped a quick shot before he was gone. By the time I got outside, I couldn’t find him. Now I know why they are called sly foxes. I keep hearing there are a lot of coyotes around, so I’m waiting to see them and the local bears as well.
The biggest casualty of the writer’s strike has to be my favorite show 24 on Fox. It has been postponed til next January. At least I have time to watch some of the earlier seasons on dvd. See the whole story here.
Here is my Guitar Hero webpage. It shows my current status. I’m still stuck on the last few hard songs. I’ve completed a few of the expert songs, but I have a long way to go.
About a year ago, one of our smoke detectors which is hard wired in the house started beeping so I went to change the back-up battery. I couldn’t open the battery door and I noticed that the plastic casing was melted around the battery. The battery had literally exploded and trashed the smoke detector. I just chalked it up to a defective battery. Until yesterday …
I was putting the kids to bed when I heard a huge kaboom and then all the smoke detectors started beeping. I started running through the house with Emma and Luke to see if we could find smoke or find what the heck happened. We couldn’t find anything and I remembered the battery from last year. I started checking all the batteries in smoke detectors and I found another exploded battery. I finally figured out that something wasn’t right.
I searched on the internet and found that the particular model of smoke detector we have (a BRK 4120SB manufactured by First Alert) will cause Duracell batteries to explode. The company blames the battery maker and Duracell blames them for a bad design. Believe it or not, with tons of people reporting this problem, there has never been a recall. The smoke detectors work fine with Energizer or Eveready batteries. I called up the company (1-800-323-9005) and they are sending me a new unit to replace the one that exploded. They are also sending stickers to put in the detector to indicate that Duracell batteries can’t be used. The customer service rep was extra nice, but I still have a problem with their company.
Now I know enough about product liability to know that this is absolutely crazy. Remember that I was a design engineer for 11 years. If you have a product that causes small explosions in your home and disables a smoke detector when you use the best selling battery on the market, then you have a serious safety problem. Why wasn’t this product recalled? Because if they issue a recall then they open themselves up to litigation in every house fire where the people say they didn’t hear a smoke detector. This is another example of common sense being thrown out the window.
This is hilarious. I just crack up every time I see this. You know that the students never let him live this down.
My blogging has slowed down for a few days, but hopefully I’ll get back to my normal posting schedule. I usually post after the kids go to bed, and I have been using that time to be a rock star in my living room. I’ve cleared the easy level 100% (all 5 stars), and the medium level 100%. Now I’m making my way through the hard level. Just to keep me humble, Richie in our youth group showed me his mad guitar hero skills by smoking through the flames on the expert level. I’m having fun and it’s been relaxing, but I know I have to get back into the real world soon.
