The iPhone 4S

Our Apple indoctrination continues. Jennifer picked up a white iPhone 4S yesterday. She switched from US Cellular to Verizon in large part to get the iPhone. We also get the added benefit of better coverage when traveling.

I’ve played around with it and I have to admit that it’s a great phone. I’ll be sticking with Android, but I can’t make too much fun of the iPhone. I’ll be switching over to Verizon later this year when I can get out of my contract without a penalty. Right now the Droid Razr Maxx looks like the phone to get for me.

Here’s what I like about the iPhone over Android phones.

  • The camera is incredible, much better than any phone I’ve used or tried
  • Siri is better than any of the voice recognition apps I’ve tried on Android
  • The keyboard works great, especially for thumb typing
  • It integrates well with iCloud and our iPad. It’s nice that we don’t have to buy new apps.
Here’s where it still is lacking
  • The screen is tiny, it’s almost comical next to my big Motorola. I would have a tough time adjusting to the smaller screen.
  • No 4G. This is really tough to believe since Verizon already has a 4G iPad.
  • No MicroSD card and a built-in battery.
  • No widgets. I really enjoy being able to customize the homescreens on my Android.
  • The glass back. I’m seriously afraid I’m going to drop it. You really need a good case.

I would add 1) battery life (Hannah comments all of the time (after moving from a Droid to iPhone last month) that she loves the fact that she doesn’t have to charge her phone 3 – 5 times per day), 2) retinal display, 3) speed (Hannah also comments regularly about how much faster the iPhone is over her HTC Desire Droid), 4) non-fragmented hardware, and 5) closed app store (It drove me nuts to have to research each app that my daughter was going to download from the Google app store to make sure it didn’t have malware, viruses and/or spyware on it) to the iPhone pros.

To the Android pros, I would add 1) various price points (You can get into an Android phone for as little as $0.01).

I’ve messed around with phones with larger screens and I prefer the small iPhone screen. I want to have a phone, not a micro-tablet.

I don’t have tons of experience with Droid, though I would like to. I do enjoy the simplicity of iOS and Siri is just a phenomenal piece of technology.

    • Good thoughts Rob. I agree on most of them. Speed on the newer Android phones is great. The Desire was good when it came out, but that was 2 years ago. Siri has been fun to play with, but I’m interested to see how much Jennifer uses it in the future.
