Planning and Preparation

planningcenter

Over the last four years at Cornerstone, we have not developed a reputation for planning our services.  We typically showed up on Sunday morning and hoped everything would fall into place.  Most weeks it did, although the stress level was through the roof when the unexpected happened.  I have heard numerous times that we should just let the Holy Spirit lead, and not worry about how everything comes together. But my question was always, do we honor God with our lack of preparedness?

With the addition of our Saturday night service and a second band, it became increasingly difficult to coordinate everything happening in the service. How many songs is the band playing? What song should we use for the response time? Who is doing announcements? What videos are we playing? All these questions and more were asked every week. The other problem was for the band. They needed the ability to share chord charts and songs and even schedule who was playing each week. Based on the recommendations of several churches, we decided to give PlanningCenterOnline a try.

We’re two months in, and I’m loving the service. We haven’t got all our songs into the system yet, but the potential is great. We are printing out a service plan each week for our band, speakers, and audio/video operators. I am even thinking about expanding the use of it to schedule children’s workers and greeters each week. You can check out the video below to find out more.

And finally, the Holy Spirit can move just as much when we plan earlier in the week. Let’s not use the Holy Spirit as an excuse for our own unwillingness to plan and prepare. The schedules are still just a guideline.  In a few cases we have changed up the service as we go because we did feel God leading us to do things differently.  But because the plan was in place, the stress and craziness has been drastically reduced.

Tweens and the Bible

newtestament

Through the Blogger review program at Thomas Nelson, I had the privilege to review the Next Generation New Testament.  Anytime I can take a look at how companies are combining technology with youth ministry I get excited.  It contains CD’s full of mp3 files of the entire International Children’s Bible New Testament, read and dramatized by an all-star cast of tween and teen stars.  It contains over 23 hours of scripture read by American Idol Jordin Sparks, Hannah Montana cast members Emily Osment and Cody Linley, High School Musical’s Corbin Bleu, actress AnnaSophia Robb, and many more.  Max and Jenna Lucado provide great book introductions as well.

Since I have been in youth ministry for a long time now, I wanted to see if this would be appropriate to give to teens. After spending some time listening through it, I would have to say that the better audience would be the 8 to 13 ‘tweener’ crowd.   The sound effects and soundtrack add to the dramatic feel of the narration.  Think of it as a movie without the video.

I decided to check it out with some help from my 10 year old daughter.  She was excited when she realized that some of her favorite tv and movie stars took part in narrating the Bible.  She likes it and now wants to use my old iPod nano just for listening to the Bible. If it helps my children get excited about God’s Word, then it definitely gets my attention.  The best part was the dvd containing video clips of all of the actors and actresses sharing about their faith.  It was great seeing my kids engaged and excited about hearing the testimony of others.

It did seem a little strange to hear some of the adult roles in the Bible being read by teen boys with very young voices.  And I would have preferred that they base the project on a Bible version that wasn’t for young children.  I think pre-teens and teens can easily understand most modern adult translations.  But overall I think this is a great idea, one that I would recommend for middle schoolers with iPods.

The Word of Promise: Next Generation is much more than just a word-for-word reading: it’s an all-star cast performing audio drama with a rich original score and Hollywood special effects. When Jesus walks on the water, kids will feel like they’re in the boat. When Peter waits in the courtyard during the Lord’s trial, the fire will crackle. The ambient sounds of the Holy land, the breath-taking musical score, the world-class young actors and the timeless Word of Promise all combine to deliver an unparalleled achievement.

Set includes 24 hours of audio drama on 3 mp3 CDs and a bonus 75 minute Behind-the-Scenes DVD featuring interviews with the actors.

For the sake of your children, fix your marriage

kidceo

Kid CEO by Ed Young

I found myself watching the end of Jon & Kate plus 8 last night, and like many of you, I found myself both saddened and upset that their marriage struggles were on national tv for everyone to see.   I hope and pray that they can work through the tough times they are experiencing. At the end of the show, they both said something that bothered me.  They both said that it is all about the kids.   While that may sound like the right thing to say, it is far from what the Bible teaches.   It made me think back to a book I read several years ago by Ed Young called Kid CEO.   The absolute best thing for children is for parents to have a strong marriage.

In the book, Ed shares how many marriages get in trouble because all the focus and energy is on the children.  After time, the husband and wife find themselves in a position where they really have drifted apart.  The Biblical model for marriage and parenting is to teach and train our children to leave.  It may sound harsh, but we have a responsibility to prepare them for life, and hopefully that includes demonstrating true love, even in the face of adversity.

Let me encourage you as parents …

  • To take time to strengthen your marriage
  • To pray together
  • To read your Bible together
  • To take time away from the kids
  • To communicate clearly and often
  • To sit down and talk, even when it is tough
  • To work as a team
  • To date often
  • And to not be afraid to get counseling

Here’s some info on the book.

In these days of corporate scandal, there’s a far more pervasive and serious problem going on right under our noses. It’s a family takeover orchestrated by our kids. That’s right – children are taking control of family units in record numbers. When a man and woman marry, says author Ed Young, they occupy the leadership roles in their relationship. But in some cases, as children enter the family arena, that begins to change. The kids slowly become the center of the family universe as parents relinquish control to them. In effect, the children become Kid CEO’s and the parents become the support staff. As parents, we have charge of our children for only a short time. It’s up to us to prepare them for life.

Make Us Servants

I’ve been thinking about the many teenagers that I have spent time with over the past 13 years of youth ministry.  Some of the teens have really excelled in life and faith, while others have struggled.  While thinking about the teens who have done well, one characteristic seemed to be consistent:   An attitude of service…

Some teens just naturally go out of their way to help.  They want to do everything they can to serve others.   I’ve seen them reach out to others who are hurting, I’ve seen them help me around the church, and I’ve seen them minister on mission trips.   But how do you teach service?   I know we can model it, I know we can teach and preach the life of Jesus, and I know we can give them experiences to practice it, but it still seems that so many teens don’t understand the importance of service.

I’m concerned when I look at the youth of our church (and even my own children) and see selfish attitudes and desires.  I think that our children and teens should naturally help others without being asked. They should see a need and respond to it. We should have high expectations when it comes to serving others.

It is a daily process to die to yourself and put others first, and I hope and pray that as a pastor and father, I can teach and model what it is like to be a follower of Christ.   But I would love to hear your ideas on how to teach our children and youth how to be servants.  Join in the comments below and share your thoughts.

Kris Allen singing “God of This City” – A Great Combination

If you have read through my twitter updates, you know that I have not been a big Adam Lambert fan on American Idol. I get tired of hearing every song turned into a screamfest.  But I was excited to see two worship leaders, Danny Gokey and Kris Allen, end up in the top three.   Kris surprised many by winning, but he is truly a great artist and a great guy.  Here is a clip of him leading worship at church.  I really love this song, and I’m grateful that he is using his talent to honor God.  Let’s all pray for him.  He has a huge opportunity.

Praisin’ In The Park

praisinpark-logo2009For the second year in a row, our church is joining other area churches to do a week-long event for children.  I finished up a quick website for it last night using iWeb.  After using iWeb, I am really tempted to start using wordpress as a framework for all my little side projects.  It’s more powerful, and easier to keep updated.  iWeb is great for static sites that don’t change much, but it definitely has some limitations.  I was glad that iWeb ’09 added the ability to publish to ftp sites.  I added this website to my Bluehost web hosting account and it worked great.

I’ll be posting some more information about the event as it draws near.  Especially about the kickoff youth event, Praisin’ Loud in the Park, with Decemberadio in concert.  This thing is going to be huge this year.  You definitely don’t want to miss it!

Ministry Website Plugins

I came across an interesting service by the church web design company elexio. They are offering several different ministry related plugins that will work with any church website. Currently, I am trying out the MediaRush plugin here on the blog. Check it out, it seems pretty slick. They have reasonable prices for most of these. I would love to see more companies offer web solutions like this.  It really opens up some great opportunities to create feature rich church websites using any web design program.

Staying S.O.B.E.R.

Another awesome weekend at Cornerstone.   I am thankful to be part of a church that doesn’t mind shaking things up! We did things a little differently this week.  Usually our Saturday night and Sunday morning services have the same message.  This week was just a little different.  On Saturday night, I preached from the book of Nehemiah about overcoming a fear of commitment.   And then we had a special guest speaker this morning.  If I can track down the CD from last night, I will place both messages on our podcast.

A few months ago, I issued a challenge to our church to start looking for ways to engage our community.  As a result, a group of committed people at Cornerstone started meeting and seeking God’s will.   Through a series of divine encounters, we found out about an individual in our area that has an incredible addiction recovery ministry. Mike Edwards has a ministry called S.O.B.E.R., and he has made an impact on hundreds of people in our area.  He shared a powerful message of God’s grace and redemption with us this morning.

On a typical week, he has multiple meetings with over 500 people attending a 12-step addiction recovery program. He is also creating a halfway house for people who need somewhere to stay while overcoming their addictions. Mike Edwards overcame some serious addiction problems in his past and has an incredible testimony of how God can transform your life.  He felt God leading him to renovate a small apartment complex into a place where people can be encouraged, find work, and get back on their feet.

He is passionate about sharing Christ and his ministry has made an incredible difference in our community.   We are looking forward to partnering with him in the future as we develop a strong addiction recovery ministry at Cornerstone. He has already helped counsel several people from our church who are struggling with addictions.  We have 3 workdays scheduled to help him work on the complex, and I invite you to join us.  You can find out more about Mike and the work he is doing on his website.
