While I’m on a video posting kick, I want to share a cool video by a teenager. The teen from England posted the video on youtube. It got noticed by Apple so they asked the teen to work with their ad agency to make it into a real ad. With cheap tools for video editing available now, how many other companies will follow Apple’s lead to let their customers develop advertisements? This video also made me think about how we can be using teens to help with technology in church. The complete story is here.
Don’t Give Up
For all the football fans out there, this is an incredible play. I just spoke on teamwork at church, and this is a great real life example of that.

I Feel Appreciated
I wanted to thank everybody in the church for gift card to Circuit City for pastor appreciation month. In honor of pastor appreciation month, here are some comments I’ve gotten about being a full time pastor.
What my son Luke told his cousin last night.
“Yeah, my dad doesn’t work anymore, he’s a preacher now!”
What I have been told in church before (jokingly I hope)
“I guess you get the whole week off since you don’t have to preach next week!”
“What do you do all week?”
But I honestly do feel appreciated. Thanks again for allowing me to serve.
Random Thoughts
Here are some things on my mind right now since it’s 5 am on a Saturday morning.
- I hate being sick. I’m such a whiner. I’ve been up for the last two hours with some type of stomach bug. It sucks. It does make me think about having a backup process in case I can’t preach on Sunday.
- We had a rough time getting home from the beach. Kids throwing up all over the car, stuck in traffic for hours, and sleepy, but we were safe. And for that I thank God. I am incredibly blessed with my family.
- GMail has started using IMAP!! For the tech geeks, this is awesome. What it means is that you can synchronize your mailbox across different programs and computers. It even keeps all your folders intact. I’ve already set it up in Apple Mail and on my Motorola Q. I need to setup Jenni’s email on Outlook the same way. This is great, especially for my Q. If you use gmail with any other application, change your setup to start using IMAP instead of POP. You won’t regret it. Instructions are here and here. It will also give you offline mail access if you use a desktop mail program.
- I have the new Mac OS X operating system Leopard. I pre-ordered it and it is sitting on my desk right now. I really want to install it, but I am going to wait until Monday to make sure I have time to troubleshoot any problems before the next Sunday morning. That’s a good and bad thing about using the same laptop for presentation on Sunday morning that I use during the week. It’s efficient, but I can’t screw it up or it will affect the whole church.
- I’m enjoying the series on Body Building at church. I’m excited to see how many people will join a new life group as a result of the series. I really believe that life groups are where true life change happens. Going through the week surrounded by people who encourage us and hold us accountable.
- A Christian comedian Scott Davis will be at our church next week. It’s great to have a week off from preaching so that I can focus on getting our new life groups organized.
- We will be starting a new series in a few weeks from Willow Creek called Just Walk Across the Room. It’s the best training material on relational evangelism that I have seen.
- We had a good time at the beach, but we have so much to do on the house that it’s good to be back. Our garage door is broken, I need to fix an exhaust pipe on the furnace, and I really need to clean out the garage so my car will fit.
- I really want to blog about the technology we are using in our church right now. EasyWorship, Kidzpro, and Elevate come to mind. All our technology is on a shoestring budget and would work for any small church.
- I just read two blogs by teens at our church. Here and Here
- I think I am going to try to go back to bed now. More randomness later.
Stuck In Traffic
It’s 1 am and we’re stuck in traffic trying to get home from the beach. Looks like there is an accident up ahead. We’ve been sitting in the same spot for about 30 minutes. There is nothing else to do except blog.
We’ve had an exciting trip home. Stopping for bathroom breaks and wiper blades and then Emma got sick in the car. As you can imagine, we would like to get home. We just put a veggie tales movie in our van’s DVD player, so maybe that will keep the kids occupied or asleep.
sent from my Q
update: We didn’t move for about 3 hours because of a multi-car pileup right in front of us. We were only a 1/2 mile behind the accident, so we didn’t get home til 3:30 in the morning. After sitting still for 3 hours, I decided to lead the family in prayer. We were all wanting to get home and we realized that we hadn’t prayed yet. About 30 seconds after I said amen, all the cars started cranking back up and we started moving! Luke said, “Daddy, why didn’t you pray sooner?” It was a great lesson on the power and importance of prayer, and a reminder to me to pray when something happens, not later.
At The Beach
We’re at the beach! My mom and dad rented a condo at Myrtle Beach this week and invited us down to stay with them. My brother and his wife are down here as well. You can’t turn down a trip to the beach. It’s going to just be a short trip, but we will definitely have fun. It’s the first vacation my family has taken together in a long time.
