Don’t Look Down

Have you ever been walking along the beach and looked down at the water flowing in and out with the waves. Before you realize what’s happening, you start getting a little dizzy. I always feel stupid standing in 2 inches of water and staggering around like I’m drunk. But the solution is simple, just look up and look out in the distance, and everything stops spinning.

I think that’s how ministry is. It’s easy to look down and focus just on what you are doing and lose sight of the big picture. But sometimes a break from your normal routine is just what you need to look up and focus on the future. In ministry, and life, the daily grind can get you worn down. It’s easy to go through the motions and go into survival mode, just doing enough to make it through the day. But God has called us to so much more. We must look up and focus on the cross and what Jesus has called us to do. When we do that, we realize that the swirling water around our feet really isn’t that bad. And the daily grind becomes much more of a joy rather than a burden when we realize that we are called to live an abundant life, that Jesus wants us to leave our burdens behind and just focus on following him.
