Jenni is Blogging!

For the last year, I have heard over and over and over again, “If I had a blog, I would blog about that” So after getting much grief from me about it, my wonderful wife has started her own blog at http://www.jennimorris.com

So watch out, she is a lot funnier than I am, and more insightful as well. She has a few posts up and I am really looking forward to reading her blog. It will be a mixture of thoughts about family, life, church, and even being the wife of a pastor. So check it out and get a glimpse into the scary but wonderful mind of Jenni.

Creating Community

I just finished reading this book which was written by Andy Stanley and Bill Willits. I read it because I have been struggling about how we can do a better job as a church to build community. We have a few lifegroups, but for the most part, we aren’t doing a great job at connecting people throughout the week. As we grow, we have to develop the small group structure to help this occur. So there are some great takeaways from this book which is based on the small group structure at Northpoint. This book forces you to ask some questions, basic questions, but important ones.

  • What do you want people to become? The answer to this question will determine much of your structure
  • What do we want people to do? How do you measure Spiritual maturity? They define this as growing in their love for God and others. I really like the statement: “We want them to grow in their intimacy with Christ, community with insiders, and influence with outsiders”
  • Where do you want people to go? What activities/classes do you offer to make the first 2 questions happen.
  • “What are the steps required to easily and clearly lead people through the process?

Overall there are some really good concepts in the book. I have never really been a huge fan of the analogy of the foyer/living room/kitchen that Northpoint uses, but I do like the logic behind it. I’ve got a few more books to read about developing our small group ministry, but I really want to see Cornerstone setup a system that allows people to be fully devoted disciples of Christ. And that occurs every day of the week, not just on Sundays.

Experimenting With Facebook

I’ve been playing around with the social networking site facebook the last few days. It seems much cleaner and easier to use than myspace. It seems like a neat way to connect with some other pastors and some old friends. I must be getting old because there are very few people my age from my schools who are on facebook. Right now, it does seem to be much more of a college site than myspace. Most of the teens at our church use myspace and many of them haven’t even heard of facebook.

Anyway, if you have any good tips about facebook and how it can be used for ministry let me know. I’ve added quite a few former youth as friends, so I’ll see how this viral thing works. If you are on facebook and want to add me as a friend click

Pressing Onward

Preaching in church is a unique experience. Some weeks it can be extremely draining and some weeks it is extremely invigorating. Yesterday was one of the draining weeks. I really felt like I struggled through the message. By the time I got home I was pretty frustrated and down. But I know that I can’t dwell on weeks that everything doesn’t just click. I will continue to press on, knowing that I’m not perfect and knowing that God will use messages that may not be the best. It was such a crazy week that I really didn’t have time to slow down and mentally prepare for my message. I had the studying part down, and I had all my notes, but I do need to take time to just meditate and listen to what God wants me to say and do. I always take comfort from Paul’s words in Philippians 3:12-14

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Community Visibility

We had two incredible opportunities to let people know about our church this weekend. On Friday, the Cornerstone Kids Ministry hosted a lemonade stand in front of Wal-Mart. They raised over $540 to give to the local tri-area pregnancy resource center. Kids helping unborn kids. It was awesome to see our kids from church raising money and talking with people as they went by. But we also had the added benefit from being featured on the local Christian radio station SpiritFM. We were able to share about our church on a radio station that is heard in over 3 states and has a huge listening area. What excited me most was the opportunity to talk with numerous families and individuals that stopped by the stand. Although Cornerstone has been in existence for a couple of years now, we are still relatively unknown in our area. I hope that is about to change.

The second opportunity was our Summer Blockbuster Kick-Off at our church land. We had games and big inflatables and free hot dogs and face painting and sand art and we just let the kids have a great time playing. We were able to register over 60 kids for our week-long summer blockbuster. It was great because we saw several families from our community stop by. We have spent the last two youth meetings canvassing our community by passing out fliers about the summer blockbuster and about our church. We really want to be a huge part of the community that God has put us in. Even now, as we are planning how to develop the 18 acres that God has entrusted to us, we are trying to decide how to best make the land available and usable to the community.

Two great opportunities for people to see the church actually be the church. I read that nearly 95% of the average church’s ministries are for its members alone. For Cornerstone, that is not going to happen. We are committed to reaching out to our community and world for Christ. In Acts 4:20 it says the apostles “couldn’t stop speaking about what they saw and heard” I hope that describes us as a church. That we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen God do.

Cool Way to Find New Music

I’ve been experimenting with a new site called Pandora Radio. You just type in a band or a song that you like and pandora will create a free internet radio station based on that band and style. As the songs are playing, you can help it by telling it what you like or dislike. It actually works. I’ve been listening a station based on Kutless this morning. I don’t like complete silence so I’ve usually got music playing somewhere in the background, so I will probably use this site all the time. It’s a good way to find out some new bands that you haven’t listened to before.

Our Newest Member of the Family

Last night at about 2am, I gave birth to this thing. I feel much better now. See here for an explanation.

I always want to be reading something that stretches me. It doesn’t always have to be a “Christian” book either. What books besides the Bible are you reading this summer?
