Psoriasis Psucks

Those of you who know me, know that I have some crazy skin problems. I’ve had moderate to severe psoriasis for about the past ten years. This time of year it really gets irritating. My skin dries out and cracks and itches like crazy. And on top of that my hands and knees get stiff and sore from arthritis that is caused by the psoriasis. I’ve finally found a medicine that actually works. Unfortunately it is far from cheap. I am on my 3rd round of Amevive. I get one shot a week for 12 weeks and then my psoriasis will go completely clear for about a year. Each shot, before insurance, is $1250. That doesn’t count the labwork that I have to get each week. But it works, so I’m not complaining.

And here’s the crazy part. When I was reading the fine print about the medicine and all the ways that it can kill me, I learned that it is made from the “recombinant DNA technology in a Chinese Hamster Ovary” So I guess I get the ovaries of a hamster injected in my arm each week. That’s a comforting thought. The marvels of modern medicine. How in the world did a researcher suddenly say, let’s use Chinese hamster ovaries. Why couldn’t they use an American hamster. Before you know everything will be made in China.
